"We don't need no stinking Badges!"

My latest cravings come from Lee Meszaros and her Be Proud Merit Badges Etsy shop.

Here are just a few of my favorites.

Wednesday Cravings: Fanny pack/Bum Bag...just wait!

I admit it. Back in the early 90s I was a fanny pack/bum bag toting fashionista [cough]. I had one. Only one. A black nylon, nondescript, mid-sized, zippered bag of miracle. I mostly wore it when I traveled, which I did heaps in the 90s. Ok and when I went to amusement parks and the likes. Never lost nothing on a roller coaster. If I ever did sport it as casual gear, I have blocked that out of my mind and I'm going with that.

C'mon, it was the perfect place to keep your gear close, safe and attached. Hands free action, no prob. Have shoulders that can't keep a bag strap (or bra strap for that matter) on to save your life? Strap across the chest, à la messenger style, emphasize stuff a little too much? Backpack waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much? You paranoid? Fanny pack is here to save your day. Carry your wallet, passport, makeup, camera, snacks and English to [insert current local language] phrase book. A miracle.

Time ticked on. I didn't travel as much anymore. When I did, I started keeping my moola and passport um, much closer and very hidden, let's leave it at that. Whilst traveling I developed a bag fetish to match my already extreme shoe fetish. France, Italy and Spain will do that to a girl. I was soon buying bags to bring back bags (and shoes). Plus, the fanny pack was, postmortem, somewhat shredded at the zipper from overloading and riddled with thin shiny spots from hard metal objects trying to escape the squeeze inside. Not presentable at all.

Then my career took over. You become a massive bag lady when you're an interior designer. You basically haul rocks for a living.  All those tile, stone, carpet, wood, paint, laminate, metal and cool new thingy you just discovered samples have to get to the presentation.  In San Francisco, my office was located in the South of Market (SOMA) district (around the corner from the MOMA, lol) so you were hauling while walking to the clients. Drive? It's just a few 4 or 8 or 10 city blocks and you would have to park 11 blocks away after circling for an hour and the meeting's in 30.  All this in heels mind you.  That's another story for another day.

Once I left San Francisco and my career took on another life, I found myself liberated.  Liberated from the need to haul anything around.  Just my slick metal wallet, cell phone and keys. No makeup, as 1. I have discovered how to keep my makeup on all day pretty much without any need of touch up and 2. I now live in Seattle where natural is king, errr, queen. It's true, pigs fly. I go outside without makeup, in public, only sunscreen and yes, I allow people to see me like this. Well, strangers mainly. Mostly at the post office and Whole Foods.

But what about those rare occasions when I do have to carry something else? Or having my phone and wallet in my hands is not conducive to the occasion and cumbersome within my jeans' pockets? I'll usually ask Y to cart some of my stuff for me in his pockets if he's there (hey, at least I don't ask him to hold my purse) or if I have the polar fleece on, I just stuff those pockets.  Seattle is a super casual town.  I'm still getting used to that aspect.  I'm always thinking I have to dress up for stuff, told I don't and then am relieved I listened and am wearing the Seattle uniform: jeans, groovy comfy shoes, something cozy up top and maybe a hoodie. To varying degrees that's the uniform. I refuse to deal with an ever falling shoulder strap anymore and a bag in my hand is too much at times. So whatever.

Then I saw this:

and this:

OMG! It's too perfect and so dang cute!!!!
Kinies Ruffled Waist Purses! All different kinds!

in black

and even chiffon!

I really, really, really want one! I can't decide between the three variants I have shown here. The black corduroy would be my normal move, black chiffon way fun but the blue gray corduroy is so dang cute with the jeans! They have other colors and plaid as well. I'm slightly leaning towards the blue at the mo but black would definitely go with my wardrobe hands down. Now I just have to figure out why I need it. Just gimme some time to think on that and maybe there will be more fabric choices. I could use the 'I just had surgery' [pouty face-saucer eyes-bats lashes] ploy with Y but I just had surgery and it wasn't cheap. So, I wait.

You don't! Go take a gander and check out Kinies other awesome bags and scarves. If I still had that bag fetish I would be in big trouble in that shop. These days my fashion fetish is limited to socks.

xoxo,

Wednesday Cravings: It's been a rough morning, yo.

I am OK.

The car is OK.

I am safe at home.

Long story short: I was on the freeway going back to Seattle when the car hydroplaned in the fast lane. Lots of swerving, dodging cars and median walls to spin and end up facing sideways instead of forward in traffic. Miracles happen. No cars hit anything and we all lived.

I have now calmed downed, counted my blessings and my appetite has returned.

I'm going to Five Guys for lunch, dang it all to hell! I need some comfort food.

Five Guys Seattle
(Just opened up this past weekend)

It takes more than five guys and some gals.

We actually discovered Five Guys while in NC. OMG THE YUMMIEST BURGER & FIRES! I consider myself a hamburger connoisseur of sorts. Seattle had lacked any kind of burger satisfaction for me. I tried Dick's Drive In (ok when desperate on a late night), Red Mill (got food poisoning from their secret sauce, bleck), Kid Valley (awful), Fatburger (decent) and Lunchbox Laboratory (the best I had found but still not quite right). In the Bay Area it was all about Nation's Giant Burger (your greasy spoon burger satisfier with loads of comfy goodness) and 21st Amendment (your yummy restaurant burger of superior quality).

Five Guys when ordered with grilled onions is like having Nation's, O Yeeeeeah!

As we ate our Five Guys burgers in NC I wished for one to open near me and low and behold one did like two weeks later!!!! It's a sign. I can live in Seattle.

About to get my grub on,

Found veil, lost future husband and pubescent growly bear.

Found:

I've decided on a veil and I can't wait for it to arrive!!! It's beyond perfection at least in my mind. I found it on Etsy so final verdict will be when I try it on but I am super excited. YAYs!!

Lost:

I was preparing yesterday's Wednesday's Cravings when I ran across Mochi's future husband,

I was actually going to treat myself, and Mochi of course, to this wonder for my birthday since in the past two weeks I have had a bunch of sales, w00t! I found him and emailed his cuteness to Y but ran out of time and had to dash off to pick up Y. By the time I got home and prepared dinner etc. I went to purchase him and he was SOLD!!!! I actually even grilled Y asking him if he had bought him for me, since my birthday is within two weeks, and he said no. Plus I know that this year we gave each other birthday and xmas presents by ponying up for 6 months at our gym. But, the same thing happened with Mochi so I even asked if he was lying and he said why would he lie. Sad thing is I believe him because I know he wouldn't buy something while at a client site.

My heart is broken.

I don't know how I missed Blackie being listed since August and the day I find him he sells, dang-diggity-dang-bamn!

Do you think she'll forgive me?

Pubescent Growly Bear:

That's what I currently sound like. I have had laryngitis for a week due to the flu and totally lost my voice. I am just starting to feel half humanoid but I am afraid the other half is a growly bear going through puberty with his larynx being stretched into low growls with cracks and squeaks thrown into the mix.

Grrrrr[squeak]rrrrr,

Wednesday Cravings: Satisfying Urges

I missed blogging my Wednesday Cravings post earlier today because I was too busy trying to get my soon to be forbidden grub on. Today I went with a Carne Asada Burrito. I plan on getting in a Hot Fudge Sundae tomorrow as well. These consist of everything that I crave as comfort food in the most compact package possible.

Why the madness? Y and I decided last night to join the Fall LEANing Challenge at our gym. For seven weeks, beginning this Friday, we will be eating Paleo. Everyone who enters puts $30 in the kitty and there will be one female and one male winner selected who will split the kitty and get a free month at the gym. The part I am most reluctant about is taking 'before' and 'after' pics. Luckily, the only way they will be seen is when I make it into the top 5 girls. Plus, they will only be up for viewing in person at the gym on the day that everyone who entered gets to vote for the winners. I figure the peeps at the gym know how out of shape I am anyway, LOL.

What the heck is Paleo? "In a nut shell, Paleo eating consists of eating meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds. No grains are allowed. No processed food...There are no portion controls. For even better results, add the Zone blocks (portion controls) to Paleo eating." If you are interested, you can get more info here.

Why are we doing this? If you are a regular reader, you know we committed to investing in our health this past summer. Working out with Sean, our trainer at CrossFit Seattle, has been a great experience. That Y and I both enjoy the workouts is amazing in and of itself. That I in particular now enjoy and understand the huge benefits of strength training is mind blowing. I heart deadlifts and back squats. <--Who is that girl?? O, it's me! LOL No longer will I ever be the girl treading on that mill to nowhere.

We also started changing our diets in the past few months, slowly at first and then we were on a real roll! Can I tell you something. Exercise alone doesn't do it. As soon as I started counting my calories/portions and making better food choices I started to drop pounds like never before. You would be amazed at what a cup of strawberries actually is compared to what you think it is (it's smaller). We noticed we also felt heaps better in general. We are pretty upbeat folks but you know that sloshy, I can't put my finger on it, I feel kinda gray, achy, deep inside blah feeling that seems to be there but maybe it's in my head feeling? Yeah, that one, it disappeared!! You hear and read it all the time, eat right, exercise and it makes you feel good. You think, 'I feel pretty good sitting on this couch eating my ice cream, how much better could I want to feel?' OMG! HEAPS BETTER! It's quite amazing.

How do I know it is the diet? Well, for the last two weeks Y and I fell off the wagon. Due to extenuating circumstances beyond our control we couldn't train for the past two weeks. We chose to totally not make up for it and went back to our bad eating habits, it was only two weeks, right? All of a sudden, we felt cranky, kinda sick and sluggish. DING! We are eating crap and feel like crap, d'uh! We want to feel good again!

The Fall LEANing Challenge has come at just the right moment to give us that extra incentive to get back into eating right. We are both super competitive. We plan on taking the entire kitty for ourselves, heh heh heh. Seven weeks of being mostly strict (you are allowed some cheating) is something I can wrap my head around, especially after the ground work I have already done these past few months. Being that much leaner before my next birthday in November will be a huge present for myself, one that I really, really, really want. Changing my eating habits for the better, priceless.

I am now on record and you can expect updates of our progress.

Please send good ju-ju our way :)
